Screen Printing Column (57)

~Let’s screen print commercially available adhesives~

Screen printing is characterized by the ability to print with a variety of inks.
Last time, I introduced how to make ink by mixing resin and solvent.
This time, we will make screen printing ink using an adhesive that is easily available at stationery stores.
Prepare a one-liquid adhesive sold under a name such as "○○○ Bond".

It is an adhesive that is sold in one tube only.
I won't use the 2-liquid type adhesive (the one sold in a set of 2) because it cures quickly.
(If the adhesive hardens, the screen plate will be clogged.)
Even with a one-component adhesive, the solvent evaporates quickly and dries quickly, making it difficult to print as is.
So replace the solvent with something else.

Work in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask and safety glasses for safety.
Get a thick glass plate and a paint knife.Anything you can get at a home center will suffice.
First, pour the glue out of the tube onto the glass plate and knead it well with a paint knife.
After a while, the solvent will evaporate and the adhesive will harden.
Stop kneading just before it hardens completely. The standard is the hardness of the starch syrup.

Next, a solvent for screen printing (eg, substances sold by ink manufacturers for dilution, isophorone, etc.)
and knead further.
It's ready when the viscosity of the adhesive returns to the same viscosity as when it was taken out of the tube.became ink.
Mixing filler with this ink makes it an ink for screen printing.
Both the adhesive and the ink have the same composition.

Adhesives dry and harden quickly, and screen printing inks dry slowly.
If you go to a home center, there are various kinds of adhesives on sale.
How about using these to make your own original ink?
