Screen Printing Column (22)

- Along with Humidity -

The season of high humidity has come. Working in a damp room is hard. However, it is not only humans who suffer from high humidity, but it also affects screen printing. This is due to the properties of the materials commonly used for screen printing.

Looking at the screen plate, the emulsion coated on the plate uses a resin called PVA. This resin is not very water resistant. Also, the polyester used in the plate absorbs water, albeit to a small extent. Therefore, when the humidity increases, the performance of the plate changes.

When we look at printing materials, polyester films and polyimide films, which are commonly used, may appear to be impervious to water at first glance, but if you look at these catalogs, you will find that they absorb a lot of water.

There was something like this.
I was screen printing one weekend in early summer. A total of 6 colors are printed. When I finished printing the 5th color, the end of work chime rang. I decided on Monday for the 6th color, cleaned up and went home. However, the next day, it rained torrential rains. Humidity in the air-conditioned workshop skyrocketed.
Monday. When I go to work and print the 6th color... "Printing does not match!!"

If you have problems with printing after a heavy rain, check the humidity.
